Biblical Evidence of Evolution

Too often do people develop mixed feelings about Christianity when it comes to the controversial debate between creationism and evolution. But think about it! If a Higher Power created this vast universe, wouldn't He want us to know that He is responsible for its creation? If so, He would not allow us to be confused between religious doctrines that say so, and scientific evidence that's available for us to uncover. So if we're finding any scientific evidence of anything-- including evolution-- then there must be some connection between God's Word and the physical evidence we find.
Now the answers to most questions concerning evolution can be found in the Book of Genesis. Consider Genesis 6:1:
Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men; that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
First of all, who were these “sons of God?” Most likely, they are otherworldly spirits or celestial beings who came down to earth to intermingle with the women who born from the generations following Cain. Read further and look carefully at Genesis 6:4:
There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
The Bible does not give any specific detail as to what these giants may have looked like. Can we assume that they may have been giant ape species? There has been evidence of an extinct genus of ape called Gigantopithecus, and its fossil record suggests that individuals of the species Gigantopithecus were the largest apes that ever lived, standing up to 3 m (9.8 ft), and weighing up to 540 kg (1,190 lb).
Now the verse says these “giants” existed at the same time “when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men.” So while these strange, otherworldly spirits were intermingling with female human beings, these giants (who were possibly giant apes) were roaming the earth. From the way this is worded— There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men— it can be implied that these giants may have descended from the spirits and the women that intermingled with the spirits. The “sons of God,” are not of this world, so who knows what kinds of genes may have mixed with the human genes of the women? We can assume that the mixture of the women’s DNA and the otherworldly DNA of these sons of God passed on to their offspring and thus created strange, abnormal creatures that are mentioned as “giants” in this particular verse.
Look carefully at the last part of the verse and consider what is mentioned about these abnormal giants: Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
So they are “men.” Okay, but they weren’t just any men. They were “mighty men who were of old, men of renown.” If these giants were “mighty men of old,” they may be the mighty hominids that are being studied and discussed among researchers. (thus, they are the “men of renown!”).
So to summarize the possibility of human evolution, we can consider this theory: otherworldly spirits came to earth, intermingled with humans, and produced offspring that may have been the hominids.
And here’s another possibility: what other offspring could these sons of God have borne? We are given such a broad scope about these sons of God…there could have been a zillion types of these spirits. Their offspring could be any creature, from gigantic hominids, to monstrous beasts that we see in the Hindu temples! Now that may explain a bit about the numerous Hindu gods.
If read thoroughly and carefully, the Bible can serve as a basis for scientific evidence. Sometimes, the information can be very subtle—as we can see here in these particular verses. But if God created such a vast and complex universe, I’m sure He wouldn’t want us to disregard science for Christianity; nor would He want us to disregard Christianity for science! Therefore, we ought to take both sides into consideration and notice that there are, indeed, correlations between science and religion. We just need to be observant when we read the Bible or a research paper, and always keep an open mind to both science and religion.
